In this insightful discussion by Simon Sinek, it becomes plainly apparent how damaging phones and social media can be to all, but especially to those who are young and trying to navigate a difficult world. The bottom line is this: if you want to focus on creativity and innovation, and relationships, remove the phone. In education settings where we spend a great deal of time trying to create the appropriate environments to engage and reinforce learning, it may be more effective if we teach students how to improve their approach to the learning environment: less phone = more time to attend to content = better learning.
