F C Bartlett is considered to be the father of schema theory. The screenshots below are captured from his 1932 seminal work: Remembering. here.

Bartlett undertakes a series of experiments that lead him to create a theory of remembering. He discusses some interesting ideas about what he believes consciousness to be, and very much believes learning is an active construction of what we see before us and what has already happened.
